Tennessee Valley Authority required to revise and supplement its Environmental Review of Kingston Coal Plant replacement.

Tennessee Valley Authority has spent years planning the decommissioning and replacement of its Kingston coal-burning electricity generating plant. Despite much pressure from environmental groups, and from communities in Tennessee, TVA wants to build a natural-gas burning plant, rather than switch to clean, renewable energy.

As part of the planning process, TVA has submitted an environmental impact statement to the Environmental Protection Agency. However, the EPA has deemed this statement inadequate.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says TVA’s environmental review of its replacement of the Kingston coal plant has “serious deficiencies,” and thus “does not satisfy the requirements of NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) and its implementing regulations.” Due to these shortcomings, EPA requests that TVA issue another environmental review.
